The Government has begun developing Uhdhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, which has been designated for public use by the President.
On February 24, 2025, during his tour of all inhabited islands in the atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that Uhdhoo would serve as a picnic island for residents in the southern part of the atoll.
Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar said development plans for Uhdhoo are underway. A special team visited the island on Thursday to assess its condition, and the Minister stated that arrangements would soon be made to transform it into a travel destination for Dhaalu Atoll residents.
Previously, Uhdhoo was leased to a private party for commercial use; however, after the agreement expired, the island was returned to the government and placed under the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works. The Ministry is overseeing the island’s management and will soon announce details of its development plans to provide transparency and reassurance to the community.
Over the past year, the President has incorporated some uninhabited islands into the jurisdiction of inhabited islands to empower island councils, strengthen local communities, and create revenue-generating opportunities for residents.
