The construction of police stations on 75 islands across the Maldives has been assigned to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Fenaka Corporation, and Road Development Corporation (RDC).

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology announced on Thursday that work on the project will begin this year, following the vision and special guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

According to the Ministry, despite 91 years of police service in the Maldives, only 17 independent police stations currently exist, including those in Malé. When the current Administration assumed office, 70 islands lacked established police services. The new agreements are expected to ensure that all inhabited islands, except those scheduled for relocation under the population consolidation policy, will have police services by the end of the year.

The Ministry highlighted that once the project is completed, nearly half of all inhabited islands will have modern police centres. This is expected to reduce recurrent expenditure in the police budget while increasing spending on service delivery.

The allocation of police station construction is as follows:

  • MTCC: 15 police stations
  • Fenaka: 40 police stations
  • RDC: 20 police stations

During a visit to Raa Vaadhoo on January 21, 2025, President Dr Muizzu assured residents that police stations or posts would be established on every island before the end of the year. He emphasised that providing police services on every island is a key Presidential pledge, with a project already underway to fulfil this commitment. The initiative aims to establish facilities tailored to each island's population, economy, and needs, with significant progress already being made.

The President stated that the objective is to ensure that by the end of 2025, every island will have a dedicated facility for police service delivery. Rather than using rented spaces, these will be purpose-built structures designed to meet the necessary standards. The large-scale project is expected to significantly enhance policing infrastructure across the country.
