The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the contractor overseeing the construction of the 30-bed hospital in Baa Thulhaadhoo, has reported substantial progress in the project’s development.
Construction of the hospital began in July 2023, with the facility designed as a two-storey building to accommodate the growing healthcare needs of the region. The project aims to alleviate the burden on the atoll hospital in Eydhafushi, particularly in response to the increasing population of Baa Atoll.
To date, structural components, including the foundation, pillars, and first-floor slabs, have been completed, with the terrace slab marking the latest milestone. Meanwhile, masonry work on the ground floor and column casting at the roof level are currently in progress. With construction advancing at a steady pace, efforts remain focused on ensuring the hospital is completed as swiftly as possible.
Thulhaadhoo, the second most populous island in Baa Atoll, is home to over 3,000 residents. At present, the Thulhaadhoo Health Centre, which operates under the Atoll Hospital, receives an average of more than 40 outpatients daily.
The new hospital is expected to greatly enhance healthcare services for the local community while also improving access to medical care for residents of nearby islands, including Hithadhoo, Goidhoo, Fulhadhoo, and Fehendhoo.
With a total project value of MVR 114.50 million, the development of the 30-bed hospital represents a major investment in the healthcare sector.
