The Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation has signed agreements with Fenaka Corporation Limited and the Road Development Corporation (RDC) to expedite the development of sports infrastructure across multiple islands.

These projects aim to enhance football facilities and introduce an indoor badminton court, supporting the Government’s commitment to expanding sports opportunities in the Maldives.

Fenaka Corporation Limited has been assigned to develop football pitches in Baa Kamadhoo and Dhaalu Maenboodhoo, install floodlights at Lhaviyani Kurendhoo, and procure drag brush machines for four islands: Baa Kendhoo, Baa Dharavandhoo, Baa Thulhaadhoo, and Raa Meedhoo.

Under the agreement, the Kurendhoo football pitch lighting system must be completed within 90 days at a cost of MVR 1.6 million. The Kamadhoo football pitch, with a budget of MVR 4.7 million, is expected to be completed within 60 days, while the Maenboodhoo pitch, which includes turf installation, boundary wall construction, and fencing, has a 120-day deadline with an allocated budget of MVR 6 million.

Simultaneously, RDC has been tasked with completing football pitches in Kaafu Kaashidhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Hangnaameedhoo, and Baa Maalhos. The Kaashidhoo project, which includes turf installation and a drag brush, must be completed within 45 days at a cost of MVR 86,400. The Hangnaameedhoo pitch, involving perimeter wall construction and fencing, is scheduled for completion in 90 days, costing MVR 5.8 million. The largest of these projects is the Maalhos pitch, with a budget of MVR 11.9 million, covering turf installation, lighting, a perimeter wall, fencing, and a rostrum, all within three months.

As part of efforts to diversify sports facilities, an indoor badminton hall will be constructed on Alifu Alifu Thoddoo. The project, valued at MVR 5 million, is expected to be completed within 180 days.

The Government launched a programme last year to resume stalled sports projects, with most nearing completion. A key pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is to accelerate the development of sports infrastructure by assigning projects to state-owned enterprises. The Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation has reaffirmed its commitment to completing remaining projects within the second quarter of this year.
