Mohamed Areesh, a member of the Progressive National Congress (PNC) representing Maafannu Western North, has been appointed as the deputy mayor of Malé City.

Areesh was elected through a vote at the 188th official general meeting of the fourth term of the Malé City Council.

In the election, all 16 participating members voted in favour of Areesh. No other candidates expressed interest in the position, leading to a yes/no vote.

Areesh’s appointment follows the resignation of former Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh, who stepped down from both the position and his council membership on March 12. Nareesh cited an opportunity to serve the country in a different capacity as the reason for his resignation.
