The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a heat warning for residents across the country, cautioning that temperatures are expected to rise significantly in the coming days.

April is historically the hottest month in the Maldives, with high humidity, weaker winds, clear skies, and direct solar radiation contributing to intense heat. MET explained that during mid-March through April, moist warm air stagnates, making conditions even more uncomfortable.

As a result, the country is experiencing a high heat index, where the perceived temperature feels higher than the actual air temperature due to the body’s reduced ability to cool down through sweating. Consecutive days of extreme heat can lead to heat stress, potentially overwhelming the body's ability to cope.

According to MET, the highest temperatures are typically recorded between 1 PM and 2 PM, though cloud cover and other environmental factors can influence daily variations.

Authorities urge the public to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and limiting outdoor activities during peak hours.
