The Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, has stated that the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) is actively working to find a solution to its debt crisis.
Speaking at the FAM Extraordinary Congress held on Saturday, Minister Rafiu confirmed that FAM is currently in discussions with State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to settle the outstanding debts owed to these companies. He expressed confidence that a favourable resolution would be reached following these negotiations.
The Minister also highlighted the support provided by the Ministry to FAM, including the construction of an office for FAM and the provision of Ministry employees to assist in organising tournaments. He assured that the Government remains committed to strengthening FAM’s management and operations in the future.
Additionally, Minister Rafiu noted that when the current Administration took office, the FAM was facing an unprecedented financial decline, with debts exceeding MVR 150 million. Among the SOEs to which FAM owes payments are Maldivian, State Trading Organization (STO), and Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
