Mohamed Fazeen, Vice President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), resigned today amid efforts to remove him over a sexual harassment case.

In his resignation letter, Fazeen stated that he could no longer independently fulfil his responsibilities as a commission member and had therefore decided to step down. However, he affirmed his commitment to supporting press freedom and maintaining an independent democratic society.

Fazeen's legal counsel stated that the investigation into the allegation had not produced any evidence or circumstantial proof beyond conflicting statements. The counsel added that since his appointment, Fazeen had carried out his duties impartially and with integrity.

The investigation into the sexual harassment case, involving a female Broadcom employee, began in January. In connection with the case, Fazeen was summoned before the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions, which later moved to remove him from office. The matter was formally presented on the parliamentary floor.

Fazeen was appointed to the Broadcasting Commission on March 7, 2021, and became Vice President on January 19, 2023.
