The Parliament has amended its Standing Orders to shorten the notice period for summoning individuals to parliamentary committee hearings from five days to three.
The amendment, introduced by Ihavandhoo MP Ahmed Naseer of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), was reviewed and endorsed by the General Purposes Committee on March 17 before being presented for a vote in Parliament.
During the parliamentary session on March 18, the amendment was passed unanimously with 50 votes in favour.
Among those who supported the revision were Keyodhoo MP Mohamed Niushad and Maavah MP Ahmed Shakir from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Under the revised provisions, individuals will now be required to appear before parliamentary committees with a notice period of three days, inclusive of non-working days.
The General Purposes Committee stated that the amendment is intended to enhance the efficiency of parliamentary proceedings by facilitating the timely conduct of committee work.
