The Maldives Air Ambulance service has completed its first year of operations, conducting 787 flights and transporting 931 patients in emergency situations.
Officially launched on March 1, 2024, as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's presidential pledge, the service recently celebrated its anniversary with a visit from Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, and Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Health, to the operational area.
Maldivian, which operates the service, confirmed it now runs 24 hours a day with enhanced capabilities, including simultaneous transport of up to three patients and stretcher services. Island Aviation described the initiative as "a significant advancement in medical emergency response" for the country.
"If one sets aside political considerations and examines the reality of the service being provided with an open mind, it is clear that the change President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has brought to the Maldivian people is very modern and positive," Minister Ameen told media at the facility.
He explained that previously, medical evacuation services were only available when time permitted in Maldivian's regular flight schedules. The new dedicated service operates with a specialised medical team and aircraft that remain ready at all times, with additional contingency for seaplane operations during special circumstances.
Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim characterised the service as "a significant advancement for the healthcare system" while outlining broader healthcare goals.
"Our biggest aim in the health sector is to reduce the number of people requiring air evacuation by expanding healthcare services in the outer atolls," Minister Nazim said.
"We are proceeding with this work according to schedule, in line with the President's healthcare pledges."
