State Electric Company (STELCO) has launched Taiwan's popular Gogoro brand electric battery cycle in the Maldives, marking a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly transportation.

STELCO's Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, explained that the new system is designed to make electric vehicles more accessible to Maldivians. The battery systems and EV charging stations will be installed across various locations in Male’, facilitating the use of electric motorcycles in the capital.

The new infrastructure aims to help reduce air pollution and support the Maldives' renewable energy targets, with a goal of achieving 33 per cent renewable energy by 2028. MD Fahmy highlighted the importance of this initiative in contributing to a cleaner environment and improving public health in the community.

In addition to the installation of the charging stations, STELCO will offer test rides for those interested in the Gogoro motorcycles, encouraging a shift towards eco-friendly transport. This development is expected to boost the adoption of electric vehicles in the Maldives and contribute to the nation’s long-term sustainability goals.
