The Government has announced the introduction of lifetime allowances for the families of soldiers martyred in the November 3, 1988 coup attack, as well as for those awarded bravery medals in recognition of their extraordinary courage during the attack.
This initiative fulfils a Presidential pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to recognise the sacrifices of those who defended the nation during the coup attempt.
According to the new regulations Gazetted by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday, the families of martyred soldiers will receive a monthly allowance of MVR 9,000 for life. Eligible family members include parents, children, and widows of fallen soldiers.
The rule also outlines lifetime allowances for recipients of bravery medals awarded for their courage in the November 3 failed coup attack. Recipients of the Medal for Exceptional Bravery will receive MVR 9,000 per month, while recipients of the Medal of Bravery will be paid MVR 8,000 per month. Those awarded the Ribbon of Bravery will receive MVR 6,000 per month for the rest of their lives.
These allowances will be provided for the recipient’s lifetime. In the event of a recipient’s passing, their family is required to notify the Ministry of Defence within one month.
The Government’s decision to introduce these allowances serves as a significant recognition of the courage and sacrifices made by those who defended the nation during the November 3, 1988 attack.
