President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Uz Hussain Shaheedh as the Justice of the Supreme Court, following the approval of the Maldives Parliament’s Judiciary Committee.

This decision was made under the powers vested in the President by Article 148(a) of the Maldives Constitution.

Justice Shaheedh was sworn in during a ceremony at the President’s Office on Wednesday afternoon, where the oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad. The President presented Justice Shaheedh with his official appointment letter during the ceremony.

A seasoned legal professional, Justice Shaheedh holds a degree in Jurisprudence and Law from Al-Azhar University in Egypt and a Master’s in Islamic Judicial Science and Sharia Policy from the Islamic University of Maldives. His extensive judicial career includes roles as Magistrate of Addu City Feydhoo Magistrate’s Court, Chief Magistrate of Hulhudhoo Magistrate’s Court, Judge at the Criminal Court, and High Court Judge. He was appointed Chief Judge of the High Court in October 2023.

Justice Shaheedh’s appointment fills the vacancy left by Justice Husnu Suood’s resignation, ensuring the Supreme Court’s seven-judge bench is complete.
