Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim announced on Wednesday that a special programme to develop tourism in Haa Dhaalu and Thaa atolls will launch next month.

Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, Minister Thoriq said the initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to expand tourism beyond established hubs and distribute development across all atolls. The programme aims to attract investors by offering incentives to boost tourism in these regions.

Currently, Haa Dhaalu and Thaa atolls each have only one resort. The Minister emphasised that expanding tourism in these areas is a high priority.

"Once we launch this programme, I believe investors will be able to come easily and work in these areas," he said.

The Minister also noted plans to expand tourism in Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls in line with the President’s vision.

The announcement follows the ratification of amendments to the Tourism Act, which introduce policies for designating uninhabited islands and lagoons for tourism development. The amendments also establish procedures for charging fees, extending lease periods, and setting safety and operational standards for tourist establishments.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted the creation of the "Tourism Trust Fund," which will replace the existing "Tourism Industry Trust Fund" under the Public Finance Act. He outlined how funds will be transferred and utilised to support the sector’s growth.

The revised law also includes measures for closing tourist facilities for redevelopment and ensuring projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe.
