The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has approved a high-end township project in Noonu Atoll under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act.
The project, named Project Aaila will be developed in Noonu Dhigufaru lagoon, Noonu Dhekenanfaru, and Kuramaadhoo by Crystal Holdings Private Limited with permission granted after a review of the company's proposals.
According to the Ministry, the development will feature high-end housing and international-standard healthcare services. A solar energy system will supply 60 per cent of the buildings' energy needs.
Other planned facilities include agricultural resources, aquaculture operations, and housing for employees and their families.
Crystal Holdings must submit all necessary assessments to the Ministry within 180 days. These include a feasibility study, infrastructure master plan, and engineering and environmental assessments.
The Maldives' first major SEZ project was the floating solar panel installation in Malé Atoll, approved last February. That project is being developed by Canada's Abraxas Power Corporation.
