Over 2,000 vapes seized in smuggling attempts

Authorities have intercepted more than 2,000 vaping devices and accessories in two separate smuggling incidents, as customs officials intensify efforts to curb the illegal importation of such products.
In an official statement posted on X, customs authorities confirmed that the seizures occurred during enhanced inspections of an air cargo shipment imported into the country on 12th March. The consignment was found to contain a total of 2,008 items, including vaping devices and associated components.
Furthermore, customs officers confiscated an additional 2,062 vaping devices and related parts from the luggage of three passengers who arrived from Malaysia yesterday. Investigations into both cases are currently underway.
The importation, sale, and transportation of vaping products remain strictly prohibited. Individuals found importing vaping equipment or products intended for vaping will be subject to a fine of MVR 50,000, while those in possession of electronic cigarettes or vaping devices will incur a fine of MVR 10,000.
