Former Commissioner of Police (Retd.) Ahmed Faseeh has been appointed as the new Controller General of Immigration.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu appointed Faseeh to the State Minister-level position, according to the Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed.

The appointment follows the dismissal of Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, who had held the position since November 2023, when President Dr Muizzu first appointed him.

While officials have not disclosed specific reasons for Shamaan's removal, the leadership change comes amid an expanding corruption investigation within the Immigration Department. Authorities are probing allegations that certain Immigration officials abused their positions to extort illegal payments from foreign workers.

Police sources confirmed an ongoing investigation, which included a March 20, 2023 operation where authorities searched a residence and detained three suspects.

Law enforcement officials have stated that further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
