The Government has announced plans to establish a state-run protection centre in Addu City for individuals affected by domestic violence and gender-based violence.

Applications have been invited for the construction of the facility, with the bidding process now open.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance and Planning, interested bidders must submit their applications by April 24 by 2:00 PM. A non-refundable registration fee of MVR 1,500 or USD 100 is required for participation. The bidding will follow a single-stage, one-envelope system under the open competitive bidding (OCB) process.

The project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has pledged USD 7.5 million for the construction of the centres, along with an additional USD 2.5 million for technical assistance. In addition to the centre in Addu City, another facility will be established in Raa Ungoofaaru as part of the initiative.

The primary objective of these centres is to provide early intervention and protection for victims of domestic and gender-based violence. Once operational, the Ministry of Social and Family Development will oversee the relocation of affected individuals and their families into state custody to ensure their safety.

Addressing the nation, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasised the Government’s commitment to expanding social security measures and developing sector-specific resources to enhance victim protection efforts.
