Former Controller General of Maldives Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days following his arrest on March 21, 2025.

Shamaan is being investigated for allegedly abusing his position to secure undue advantages for foreign workers.

The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into claims that certain immigration officers misused their roles to exploit migrant workers. According to police, a group of officers raided the home of migrant workers, confiscating a large sum of cash. The investigation further revealed that a foreign worker, who was detained by immigration with MVR 530,000, was released from custody on Shamaan's orders.

Following the arrest, police searched Shamaan’s residence and recovered MVR 500,000 in cash. The investigation is focused on the actions of both Shaman and the immigration employees involved.

Shamaan, who was dismissed as Controller General of Immigration due to corruption allegations, faces serious charges related to misconduct within the immigration department. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the full scope of the alleged corruption.
