Renowned coach passes away following cancer battle

Renowned football coach Ihusan Abdul Ghani, known as Santhi, passed away on March 22, 2025, at Treetop Hospital following a prolonged battle with cancer.

He had been undergoing treatment for the illness for the past few years.

Santhi was a key figure in the development of football in the Maldives, particularly through his work with youth players. He is best known for his role as assistant coach of the national football team that won the 2008 SAFF Championship, a significant achievement for the country. He also contributed to club football, coaching The Club Eagles and United Victory, and leading The Club Eagles to success in national tournaments.

In addition to his coaching roles, Santhi served as the technical director for the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), where he was instrumental in shaping youth development programs. His dedication to the sport earned him the National Youth Award for his service to football.

Following Santhi's death, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also expressed his condolences, calling it a great shock and a significant loss for the country's sports community. On his official 'X' account, he acknowledged Santhi’s contributions to both national and international football and extended his deepest sympathies to the sports fraternity and Santhi's family. The President prayed for Santhi to be granted eternal peace and blessings.

Santhi’s passing has deeply saddened the Maldivian football community, with many remembering him as a coach, mentor, and a driving force behind the country’s football development. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
