The Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has commenced testing the fresh water network designed to facilitate water circulation between Malé and Hulhumalé.

Constructed as part of the Sinamalé Bridge, which was inaugurated in 2018, the pipeline was originally intended to enable the transfer of fresh water between the two islands.

However, the connection remained unestablished for the past five years. Following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s assumption of office in 2023, his Administration renewed efforts to complete the project, and according to MWSC, the work is now approaching completion.

Speaking to local media, MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed confirmed that the pipeline has been cleaned and fully connected at both ends. Interim testing has already begun, with the system currently circulating 3,000 tonnes of water. Upon full completion, it will have the capacity to circulate up to 20,000 tonnes between Malé and Hulhumalé.

The final stages of the project involve the construction of a pump station and necessary upgrades to its electricity network. The pump station is expected to be completed next month, after which power supply enhancements will be implemented. MWSC anticipates that the water network will be operational by mid-2025, with full-scale service expected to commence in July or August.

Once completed, the network will play a critical role in safeguarding water security in the Malé region. In the event of supply disruptions in either Malé or Hulhumalé, the system will allow for a seamless transfer of water between the islands, ensuring continued access.
