The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has decided not to pursue charges in a case involving an alleged threat by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu against journalist Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, CEO of Adhadhu.
According to the PG Office, Fiyaz had filed a complaint with Maldives Police Service on March 14, 2025, alleging that President Dr Muizzu had called and threatened him. However, after reviewing the evidence, the PG Office has determined that there was no clear indication the President used language that could be legally interpreted as a threat.
The PG Office clarified that under Maldivian law, a statement can only be classified as a criminal threat if it involves a warning of an act that could cause death, grievous injury, or harm to a person’s life or body. Additionally, threats involving dangerous weapons or harm to family members are considered prosecutable offences.
Fiyaz had lodged a complaint stating that the President had warned him of "the strictest legal action" during the call he received. However, the PG Office ruled that this did not meet the legal threshold for criminal prosecution.
