The Government will provide every household with a canned tuna case during the upcoming fasting month of Ramadan, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last night. Speaking at a meeting held at the Social Centre to mark the completion of his administration's first year, the president outlined several measures aimed at supporting citizens during this sacred period.
"As part of our preparations for Ramadan, I have instructed the Managing Director of STO [State Trading Organisation] to distribute a canned tuna case free of cost to every household, replacing the previously issued ration cards," said President Dr Muizzu.
He also highlighted broader efforts by his Administration to ease the financial burdens faced by citizens. This year, the Aovernment provided significant relief, including discounts amounting to MVR 142 million on electricity and water bills, and the distribution of 1.6 million kilograms of food grains free of charge to 82,000 households.
Further relief measures were announced for housing. The president noted that the Government had reduced housing costs and deducted expenses incurred for finishing work on Hiyaa flats from the total cost of the units. Additionally, penalties totaling MVR 77 million imposed on social housing sites were waived, providing further financial reprieve to residents.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that these initiatives are part of a broader effort by his government to alleviate economic pressures and improve living standards for the people.
