The Ministry of Cities, Local Government, Public Works has completed drainage cleaning on both sides of Majeedhee Magu as part of an ongoing effort to address Malé City’s persistent flooding issues.
The project, which began on March 8 near the Luxury Store, aims to reduce disruptions faced by residents during heavy rainfall.
The Ministry previously stated that the comprehensive drainage cleaning programme should provide considerable relief from flooding and is expected to be completed within six months.
Flooding remains one of Malé's most significant challenges, primarily caused by blocked drains preventing proper water drainage. The cleaning operation has revealed numerous drains heavily clogged with rubbish throughout the city.
Currently, flooding incidents require emergency response from military personnel, police officers and staff from the Ministry's public works unit, who pump out water manually.
The Government has committed to a comprehensive modernisation of Male's road infrastructure this year, with plans to resolve all road-related issues including flooding. A Chinese company has been contracted to carry out this development work.
