The Maldives Blood Services has announced an extension of its operating hours, effective April 6.

Under the revised schedule, services will be available from Saturday to Thursday, 08:00 to 21:00, providing an additional hour of service compared to the previous closing time of 20:00.

This revision is intended to improve accessibility and convenience for both blood donors and patients, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and reach of essential healthcare services.

Revised Service Schedule:

Saturday – Thursday

  • HB Sample Collection: 08:00 – 20:00

  • One Unit: 08:00 – 16:30
  • Two Units: 08:00 – 14:30
  • Medical Consultations: 08:00 – 20:30

This extension aligns with the Government’s broader commitment to strengthening healthcare services for individuals affected by thalassaemia—particularly children.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to upgrade and restructure the Maldives Blood Services (MBS) into a hospital-level facility, with the goal of enhancing the standard and accessibility of care. This initiative reflects the Administration’s pledge to deliver equitable, high-quality healthcare across the country, especially for patients in remote atolls who rely on regular blood transfusions and specialised treatment.

The decision follows President Dr Muizzu’s visit to the National Thalassaemia Centre on March 23, where he met with patients and staff, observed operations, and listened to concerns raised about the quality and efficiency of services. In response, he directed relevant agencies to implement immediate improvements and committed to closely monitoring progress at the centre.

Additionally as part of these reforms, Ahmed Mausoom was appointed as the new Director of Maldives Blood Services on March 24. The Health Ministry has also announced plans to appoint two Deputy Directors General and two Directors to support the restructuring process
