Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, has confirmed that a specialised system for treating construction waste is scheduled for completion by July this year.
Waste management remains a top national priority, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu spearheading efforts to strengthen the sector. As part of these initiatives, waste management centres are being developed across all Maldivian islands, with significant improvements underway in Male’ City, Addu City, and Kulhudhuffushi City.
At present, the Maldives lacks a structured mechanism for the proper disposal of construction waste. Minister Thoriq Ibrahim underscored the necessity of effectively managing debris and other waste materials generated by construction activities. To address this issue, the Government is developing a construction waste demolition plant, specifically designed for the treatment of such waste.
According to the Minister, the plant will be operational by July, after which construction waste will be transported to Thilafushi for systematic disposal. He further noted that the demolition plant is the final pending component of Phase I of the project, with completion targeted for June or July.
The Minister also highlighted that finalising waste disposal projects in Thilafushi would significantly enhance waste management efficiency, ensuring a safer environment for residents in the Male’ region. Additionally, he emphasised that these measures would contribute to reducing waste dumping into the sea, which has long been an environmental concern.
Furthermore, the Minister confirmed that the waste-to-energy plant in Thilafushi is expected to be completed next year, representing another significant milestone in the Maldives’ waste management strategy.
