Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, has announced that the Government will begin developing more resorts in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani atolls.

The announcement was made during a ceremony held to inaugurate ATM services across seven islands in Haa Alifu Atoll.

Currently, only five resorts operate across the three northernmost atolls: one in Haa Alifu, two in Haa Dhaalu, and two in Shaviyani. The Minister said the Government aims to significantly increase this number, especially now that ATM access is available on all inhabited islands in Haa Alifu Atoll.

Minister Thoriq also confirmed that new development opportunities in Haa Dhaalu and Thaa Atolls will open in April, with the Ministry developing tailored master plans and marketing strategies for each atoll to support long-term growth.

As part of these efforts, Guest House Financing has been introduced in Haa Alifu Atoll, enabling guest house operators to access financing by using their buildings as collateral, without needing additional security. Thoriq also highlighted the progress of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, stating that once completed, it will be a key enabler for tourism growth in the northern atolls.

To strengthen the tourism workforce, the Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Maldives National University to establish a hotel school, aiming to raise the tourism education sector to international standards.

Additionally, the Government has recently amended the Tourism Act, a move expected to boost investor confidence and further accelerate growth in the tourism sector.

With more than 580,000 tourist arrivals recorded so far this year, the Government remains optimistic about reaching its target of 2.3 million tourist arrivals by the end of 2025.
