The Maldives Customs Service has seized a large quantity of cartons of cigarettes found at the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).

According to Customs, the cigarettes were discovered while inspecting garbage bags being removed from the terminal. Authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway, but no further details have been disclosed.

A video circulating on social media shows Customs officers inspecting and seizing the cigarette cartons, which has drawn public attention to the incident.

Under the Tobacco Control Act, the import of materials used to manufacture tobacco products is strictly prohibited in the Maldives. The Ministry of Health has instructed Customs to seize and destroy any such items found in violation of this regulation.
