A police officer has been suspended following his alleged involvement in an attempt to remove cigarette cartons from the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).
Authorities confirmed that two individuals, Ahmed Afzal and Yoosuf Nazeer, were arrested in connection with the incident. Both were later released on bail under specific conditions set by the court. Nazeer, who was serving as a police sergeant, has been suspended from duty. His suspension also includes the withholding of salary payments.
The case came to light after customs officials examined dustbin bags being removed from the VIA departure terminal. During the inspection, cigarette cartons were discovered, prompting further investigation. Officials have not disclosed additional details regarding the recovery of the cartons.
A video has surfaced, reportedly showing a customs officer withholding the seized items. The incident is being investigated in line with the Tobacco Control Act, which prohibits the unauthorised import of tobacco products. The Health Ministry had previously instructed customs officials to seize and dispose of any tobacco-related items brought into the country unlawfully.
