The Maldivian Government has announced its intention to implement a Generation Ban, a policy aimed at preventing younger generations from initiating tobacco use as part of a broader effort to safeguard public health.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu discussed this initiative during Rayyithunnaa Eku, a podcast hosted by the President’s Office, where he outlined both existing measures and forthcoming policies designed to reduce tobacco consumption across the country. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to addressing the health and societal impacts of smoking through stringent regulations and public awareness campaigns.

While specific details regarding the implementation of the Generation Ban have yet to be disclosed, President Dr Muizzu emphasised that its primary objective is to protect future generations from tobacco dependency.

The policy is expected to include measures such as restricting the sale of tobacco products to individuals born after a certain year, effectively creating a smoke-free generation. Similar strategies have been adopted in various countries.
