The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Thailand and Myanmar following a devastating earthquake.

A powerful 7.7-magnitude quake struck Myanmar near the city of Mandalay, with tremors felt across Thailand and as far as China. The disaster was followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock. Reports indicate that at least three people lost their lives after a mosque collapsed, and the death toll is expected to rise. Myanmar’s ruling military has confirmed multiple civilian casualties and injuries.

In response to the disaster, the Ministry is undertaking necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Maldivian nationals in the affected regions. Through the Embassy of Maldives in Thailand, efforts are underway to provide assistance to Maldivians residing in Thailand. Additionally, diplomatic channels are being utilized to confirm the presence of Maldivians in Myanmar and assess their safety and welfare.

Both Thailand and Myanmar have declared a state of emergency. The Ministry urges all Maldivians in these countries to strictly comply with the directives and precautionary measures issued by local authorities. Adhering to official guidelines is essential to ensure their security during this critical period.

Maldivians in Thailand requiring assistance or further clarification are advised to contact the Embassy of Maldives in Thailand via its designated hotline. Similarly, those in Myanmar who need urgent assistance are encouraged to reach out through the emergency contact numbers provided.
