Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has stepped in to expedite the completion of the much-needed Orange Hiya for thalassaemia patients in Hulhumale’. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, in the inaugural episode of his podcast Rayyithunnaa Eku, confirmed that MNDF has been tasked with ensuring the project’s swift completion.
The construction of the Orange Hiya has faced significant delays, with the original contractor failing to meet the deadline. As a result, the Government has taken decisive action by assigning the MNDF to complete the remaining work. Once operational, the facility will serve as a dedicated healthcare centre for thalassaemia patients.
To enhance accessibility, President Dr Muizzu announced that thalassaemia patients and their caregivers will be provided free transport via Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) buses. A special bus stop will also be established near the Orange Shelter to facilitate convenient travel for patients seeking treatment.
This intervention comes in response to mounting concerns over the deteriorating condition of the existing Thalassemia Centre. Following public outcry, President Dr Muizzu personally visited the facility on 23rd March to assess the situation. In a bid to improve management, he appointed Ahmed Mausoom as the centre’s Director General, filling a position that had remained vacant since the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. Additionally, the President has pledged to appoint two Deputy Director Generals and a Director to strengthen the leadership team.
Recognising the shortage of healthcare professionals at the centre, the Government has allocated funds for the recruitment of additional nurses. The Ministry of Health has already announced plans to hire five new nurses to enhance patient care and support services.
During the podcast, President Dr Muizzu reassured the public of his commitment to improving the situation at the Thalassaemia Centre and ensuring that the necessary changes are implemented effectively.
