For generations, Eid in the Maldives has been more than just a festive occasion. It is a time to look one’s best, celebrate community spirit and take pride in beautifying both homes and hearts.
Growing up, one of the most anticipated parts of the holiday was getting to choose a fresh set of clothes or Eid Hedhun, a tradition that children continue to look forward to.
In the past, in the lead-up to Eid, families across the islands would carefully prepare their homes. One of the most cherished traditions was the renewal of Veli, white coral sand swept and levelled at the entrance of each house. This practice, passed down through generations, was a symbol of hospitality and a way to welcome guests during the festive days of Eid.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, many households decorate with fairy lights and handcrafted welcome arches known as Gidige. Each home creates its own arrangement, with lights outlining walls and colourful arches offering cheerful greetings to visitors.
A more recent addition to the Eid spirit is the Government’s Eid Ali initiative, which involves illuminating islands across the country with festive decorative lights. This year, more islands than ever are participating, with public spaces lit up in celebration, strengthening the festive spirit and unity among communities.
From carefully chosen new clothes to glowing lights and beautifully decorated spaces, Eid in the Maldives is not only about looking one’s best but also about creating an atmosphere that reflects the joy of the occasion.
