Minister of Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that two imams have been suspended from delivering the khutbah for a period of five years after failing to attend the scheduled Eid prayers at the Azeeza Mosque in Hulhumalé.

In a statement shared with the Ministry’s media group, Minister Shaheem explained that the imam originally designated to lead the Eid prayers, along with his appointed replacement, were both absent on the day of the service. Their failure to attend left the congregation without an official leader for the prayers.

As a result, a foreign national—reportedly an Egyptian—stepped in to lead the prayers and deliver the khutbah in Arabic. With no officially appointed imam present, the Eid prayers eventually commenced at the mosque after 7:07 pm.

Addressing the situation, the Minister confirmed that the imam assigned to the Azeeza Mosque has now been reassigned. Additionally, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs has been instructed to investigate the matter further. In line with established regulations, the imam will also be suspended from delivering the khutbah for five years.

Despite this incident, Eid al-Fitr prayers were successfully held at various locations designated by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. A large congregation, including men, women, and individuals of all ages, participated in the celebrations across the country.
