Fishing remains one of the key industries in the Maldives, and among those who have dedicated their lives to its advancement is Ibrahim Rasheed from Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo.

Now 53 years old, Rasheed began his journey in fishing at the age of 12. With over three decades of experience, he has become a well-respected figure in the industry, known for his unwavering commitment and advocacy for the sector.

Throughout his career, Rasheed has actively raised awareness about the challenges facing the fisheries industry, consistently bringing them to the attention of authorities. His contributions extend beyond advocacy, as he has played a vital role in encouraging and training young people to join the sector, making him a familiar and influential presence among fishing communities.

In recognition of his contributions, Rasheed was honoured with the National Award of Honour in 2023. The award highlighted his extensive efforts in mentoring youth, his expertise in pole-and-line and tuna fishing, and his valuable services to his island and atoll. He has received multiple accolades throughout his career, underscoring the respect he commands in the field.

Representing the Maldives internationally, Rasheed recently participated in the Regional Small-Scale Fishing (SSF) Workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand. There, he presented the challenges faced by Maldivian fishermen and proposed practical solutions in Dhivehi, ensuring the unique voice of local fishers was heard on a global platform.

Speaking to MMTV, Rasheed emphasised the importance of training youth, women, and fishing communities on sustainable methods of preparing fish products. He also advocated for career guidance programmes to attract the younger generation to the sector.

He further highlighted the need for collaboration with the private sector and NGOs to improve access to international markets for small-scale fisheries. Discussions at the workshop also addressed the difficulties in implementing regulations and planning for the sustainable development of the sector.

Rasheed expressed his gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam for their support and for enabling him to represent the Maldives at the workshop. He said their encouragement reflects a genuine interest in working closely with fishermen.

Calling the experience a significant boost to his work, Rasheed reaffirmed his determination to continue advocating for the rights of fishermen, stating that he remains committed to the cause and will continue his efforts
