The Government’s ‘Hope Island’ project, a Juvenile Offenders Rehabilitation Centre designed to rehabilitate at-risk children and prepare them for a better future, will be relocated to Giraavaru Uthuru Falhu.

Authorities have confirmed that 15 hectares of land will be acquired for the initiative. The Government had originally planned to develop the centre in Vaani, Dhaalu Atoll, but has now decided to shift the project to Giraavaru Uthuru Falhu, a location closer to Malé, to reduce costs.

Speaking to state media, State Minister for Homeland Security and Technology Ahmed Siddeeq explained that the move would significantly lower transportation and development expenses, making the project more feasible.

The Government considers ‘Hope Island’ a top priority, with plans to develop it as a facility capable of accommodating approximately 700 minors. The island will include a school, a healthcare centre, and sports facilities, ensuring a well-rounded rehabilitation approach. In addition to basic education and religious instruction, children will participate in therapeutic programmes, including contact sports, to aid their recovery and reintegration.

As part of the initiative, the Government has announced that children from ‘Hope Island’ will be required to serve in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) or police for a designated period upon turning 18. This aims to instil discipline and responsibility while also providing opportunities for them to pursue careers of their choice after their service.

With this project, the Government is making a significant effort to protect vulnerable children from crime and equip them to become productive members of society.
