The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed that traffic accidents remain the most frequently reported incident this 2025, with 762 cases recorded so far.

The latest figures show an overall surge in accident reports in recent years with 2,886 cases in 2024 and 2,300 in 2023.

The statistics also highlight theft as the second most common crime, with 667 cases reported, followed by 378 drug-related offenses and 234 cases of missing items. Over the past 16 years, theft and drug abuse have consistently topped crime reports.

Despite the rise in annual figures, the number of overall cases in March 2025 declined compared to previous months. A total of 757 First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed, down from 884 in February. However, March 2024 saw 1,150 cases.

Police stations across the atolls are working with local councils to curb crime, particularly focusing on road safety measures to reduce traffic accidents. Authorities continue to urge motorists to adhere to speed limits and road regulations to prevent further incidents.

With the rising number of accidents in the Malé area, police have introduced new traffic management policies to enhance safety and control the increasing incidents on the roads.
