Today marks the 30th anniversary of Malé Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC), a significant milestone that reflects the organization’s steadfast commitment to providing essential water and sanitation services across the Maldives.
On this occasion, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu extended his heartfelt gratitude to both past and present MWSC employees, recognizing their dedication and contributions over the past three decades.
Established on April 1, 1995, MWSC was founded in response to the increasing demand for clean water and efficient sanitation services in Malé.
Over the years, the company has played a crucial role in safeguarding public health and supporting national development. To commemorate this occasion, MWSC has organised a series of events, including blood donation drives, tree-planting initiatives, Kudakudhinge Haveeru, and various consumer-focused engagements.
MWSC began its journey with just 60 employees, serving a population of 60,000 residents in Malé. Since then, it has expanded significantly and now provides water and sanitation services to 200,000 people across multiple locations, including Malé, Villimalé, Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi, Kaafu Maafushi, Raa Dhuvaafaru, and Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.
Beyond its core functions, MWSC has diversified its services, offering electricity, waste management solutions, and ice supplies for fishermen in Raa Dhuvaafaru. Originally managed by a Danish administrative team, MWSC has since transitioned to a 100 per cent locally managed entity, now employing over 1,013 professionals. The company remains committed to professional development, providing specialised training programmes, short-term courses, and long-term scholarships to enhance the expertise of its workforce.
At its inception, MWSC had a daily water production capacity of 900 cubic metres and a storage capacity of 10,000 cubic metres. Over the years, these capacities have expanded exponentially.
Today, MWSC produces 47,300 cubic metres of water per day, with a storage capacity of 44,858 cubic metres. Strengthening water security remains a key priority. In addition to its main production headquarters in the Greater Malé Region, the company has established two additional production facilities within the city.
By the end of the year, water production capacity is expected to increase by 26 per cent, while storage capacity is projected to rise by 28 per cent. Furthermore, MWSC has successfully completed disinfection and pressure testing of the main water pipeline through the Sinamalé Bridge, which will connect Malé and Hulhumalé. This major infrastructure project, expected to be operational by the end of 2025, will enable the transfer of up to 800 tonnes of water per hour between the two islands, enhancing supply reliability.
As MWSC celebrates three decades of service, it is implementing several initiatives to enhance accessibility and customer satisfaction. Plans are underway to launch a 24-hour customer care centre, expand digital services through online applications and smart meters, and upgrade its online portal and mobile application to provide a more seamless customer experience.
MWSC continues to play a pivotal role in the expansion of water and sanitation infrastructure throughout the Maldives. To date, the company has successfully completed 107 water and sanitation projects nationwide. In 2025, the Government of the Maldives awarded MWSC an additional 32 projects, comprising 17 water supply projects and 15 sewerage system projects. While some are already in progress, preparations are underway for the commencement of the remaining projects.
Although MWSC was originally established as a utility service provider, it has since diversified into the engineering, trading, and manufacturing sectors. The MWSC showroom offers a wide range of high-quality water and sanitation products from globally renowned brands. The company also operates an ISO 17025:2005-certified laboratory, providing commercial water testing services for resorts, technical consultants, and businesses. In the manufacturing sector, MWSC has made significant contributions, including the production of sealed drinking water at its Hulhumalé factory, the manufacture of pipes and water infrastructure components at its Kaafu Gulhifalhu facility, and the development of essential materials for water distribution and sewerage systems.
The company acknowledges the hard work and professionalism of its employees, whose efforts have been instrumental in MWSC’s success. It also extends sincere appreciation to its customers for their trust and continued support. MWSC commemorates 30 years of delivering water and sanitation servicesMaldives
