The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced that work to upgrade the sewerage system in Faafu Nilandhoo is scheduled to begin in May 2025.
Managing Director of MWSC, Abdul Matheen Mohamed, made the announcement in response to a post on X by a Nilandhoo resident who raised concerns about ongoing sewerage issues and their impact on daily life.
Matheen stated that the island currently operates a vacuum sewerage system, which pumps sewage through small pipes to a central plant. However, he acknowledged that the existing system has caused significant difficulties and confirmed that a new, modern solution will be introduced to address the problem permanently.
MWSC will install a gravity-based sewerage system that uses large underground pipes to transport sewage directly to a discharge point. According to Matheen, this system is expected to provide a long-term and sustainable solution for the island’s sewerage challenges.
He noted that preparatory work is already underway, with both the land survey and topographic survey completed. He also added that the company is now in the process of finalising the design and that practical work is scheduled to begin once the necessary approvals are obtained from the Utility Regulatory Authority and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is completed.
The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
