President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will give equal importance to promoting physical and mental wellbeing by expanding access to public spaces across the Maldives.

Speaking during the second episode of the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, hosted by the President’s Office, the President stated that the Administration remains committed to strengthening the healthcare system while also supporting broader community wellbeing through recreational and accessible public facilities.

As part of these efforts, the President said the Government plans to develop outdoor gyms and children’s parks on every inhabited island by the end of next year. He noted that the initiative supports preventative healthcare by encouraging children to spend more time outdoors, rather than staying indoors.

The announcement builds on earlier remarks made in the first episode of the podcast, where the President outlined plans for each inhabited island to receive both a children’s park and a fitness centre within the next two years.

In addition to nationwide initiatives, the President also spoke about plans to restore and redevelop parks in Malé City, with a focus on improving accessibility and inclusivity. He highlighted the redevelopment of Sultan Park as a key project, explaining that it is intended to offer spaces for adventurous activities while ensuring easier access and mobility for all visitors.

The redevelopment of Sultan Park was initially announced in February, during the inauguration of the Presidential Jetty. The park, formerly managed by Malé City Council, is now under the management of the Government. According to the President, the project will include modern recreational facilities, smart technology, and elements reflecting Maldivian heritage.

In response to concerns from the public, particularly senior citizens, regarding the loss of natural beaches due to land reclamation, the President said that future development projects will include designated beach areas to ensure continued public access to the coastline.
