President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has encouraged a gradual transition away from the tobacco industry, asserting that tax increases alone are insufficient to curb consumption.
Rather than substantially decreasing consumption, he contended that such measures would primarily elevate retail prices, ultimately benefiting tobacco sellers while failing to achieve a meaningful reduction in demand.
Reiterating his position, President Dr Muizzu urged traders to explore alternative commercial opportunities, maintaining that the Maldives should not support a tobacco industry given its demographic limitations. He emphasised the importance of reducing tobacco use to safeguard public health and well-being.
Speaking during the second edition of the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast—an initiative designed to enhance public engagement and facilitate governance through active consultation—the President reaffirmed his firm stance against smoking and the use of tobacco products. He highlighted the detrimental impact of tobacco on both individuals and society, encouraging the public to abstain from its use.
He called for decisive action to eradicate tobacco use within the country, reinforcing the Administration’s commitment to public health and social welfare.
