Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the former President of the Maldives, has conveyed his deep admiration for Liverpool FC and his enthusiasm regarding the launch of the global tourism promotion campaign between the renowned football club and the Maldives.

Through an official statement published on X, Maumoon acknowledged his decades-long support for Liverpool FC, dating back to the 1970s, and commended President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for his role in facilitating this strategic partnership.

The collaborative initiative, formally launched on April 1, 2025, establishes an official relationship between Liverpool FC and the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), operating under the brand "Visit Maldives."

The partnership, initially announced on March 13, 2025, has been structured as a three-and-a-half-year agreement with projected outcomes including an additional 100,000 tourists to the Maldives and approximately USD 200 million in tourism revenue. Financial reports indicate an initial investment of USD 2.5 million, with economic forecasts suggesting an annual return on investment equivalent to 20 times the capital expenditure.

President Muizzu's current itinerary in Liverpool encompasses meetings with Maldivian students studying in the region, tours of football training facilities, and strategic discussions with both Maldivian officials and Liverpool FC representatives. These engagements are designed to consolidate the partnership and explore potential collaborative initiatives, including the implementation of advanced sports training methodologies in the Maldives.
