India has revised and expanded the maximum export limits for food grains and essential commodities to the Maldives.
As part of this adjustment, the Indian High Commission in the Maldives has approved the export of 1.3 million metric tonnes of rock and sand, marking a 30 per cent increase.
Additionally, export quotas for eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, flour, and rice have been raised by 5 per cent, while dal exports have seen a significant increase of 56 per cent.
Following these revisions, India’s total egg exports to the Maldives will reach 448,913,750 units, while potato exports in metric tonnes will rise to 22,589. Similarly, commodity exports will see substantial increases, with onions rising to 37,537 metric tonnes, rice to 130,429 metric tonnes, flour to 114,621 metric tonnes, sugar to 67,719 metric tonnes, and dal to 350 metric tonnes.
India and the Maldives have maintained a longstanding trade partnership, formalised through a trade agreement established in 1981. This agreement ensures the supply of food grains to the Maldives at preferential rates, helping to maintain the availability of staple commodities such as rice, sugar, eggs, potatoes, flour, and onions.
The recent adjustments in export volumes are expected to strengthen bilateral trade, benefiting both economies. Analysts predict that the increased imports will contribute to price stabilisation in the Maldivian market, making essential goods more affordable.
