Awareness about autism is gradually increasing among Maldivians, leading to visible positive changes, according to the National Mental Health Department.
A panel discussion was held by state media in connection with the internationally recognised Autism Awareness Day, bringing together representatives from relevant institutions to discuss the issue.
Speaking at the event, Aiminath Shahuza, Director of the Mental Health Department, noted a noticeable improvement in public awareness of autism compared to previous years. She highlighted that younger generations are proactively seeking information and educating themselves about autism.
She observed that even children from the emerging generations are independently seeking information and speaking out against discrimination, considering this a positive development.
She also noted a shift in how people interact with and address individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism. However, she stressed the need for greater awareness regarding how society communicates about and connects with individuals on the autism spectrum. Encouraging people to stop using disparaging language and fostering self-awareness are essential steps, she added.
