The Government of the Maldives allocated approximately USD 5.3 million to distribute a case of canned tuna to every household across the country as a Ramadan provision, in fulfillment of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge earlier this year.

By the end of Ramadan, a total of 111,231 cases of canned tuna had been distributed nationwide, benefitting 50,519 households in Malé and 60,712 households across the rest of the country.

The Government designated the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO), a state-owned enterprise, as the supplier for this initiative. MIFCO extended a USD 2 discount per case, thereby reducing the standard price from USD 49 per case of canned tuna in oil.

In the preceding year, the Government facilitated the distribution of staple food supplies to 82,000 households across the Maldives. This year, it prioritised the provision of canned fish, acknowledging its cultural and dietary significance during Ramadan. In addition to food distribution, the Government continued to implement utility bill concessions, sustaining the relief measures introduced in the previous year.
