In the early hours of the morning, tragedy struck at Alifu Alifu Himandhoo lagoon as the speedboat "Kael Wing" was completely destroyed in a sudden and catastrophic fire.

The vessel, which had recently undergone extensive repairs, caught fire just moments before its scheduled 6:00 a.m. departure.

According to the boat’s owner, Ahmed Naeem, the fire ignited immediately after the engine was started. Speaking to MMTV, Naeem described the incident as both shocking and heartbreaking. It happened in an instant, he shared, recalling how flames rapidly engulfed the entire boat. A crew member also reported hearing a loud noise just before the fire spread uncontrollably.

Naeem expressed deep distress over how quickly the fire consumed the vessel, estimating that within just two minutes, the flames had completely overtaken it. The fire spread so rapidly that any efforts to save the boat were impossible, and a significant portion of Kael Wing ultimately sank into the lagoon.

The loss of the vessel is not just financial but deeply personal for Naeem, who had invested heavily in modernizing Kael Wing. Designed to accommodate 50 passengers, the speedboat had been operational for less than a month since its refurbishment. Launched on the 17th day of Ramadan, it had only completed a few trips before disaster struck. The total cost of the vessel was approximately six million MVR, making this an immense setback.

While the destruction of Kael Wing is a devastating loss, there is some relief in knowing that no one was injured in the incident.
