Aishath Anees (Aishath Didi)

Renowned poet Aishath Anees, widely known as Aishath Didi, passed away on Saturday at the age of 91 following a prolonged illness.

Aishath Didi was celebrated for her profound contributions to Maldivian literature and music. Many of her poems were transformed into beloved songs that gained immense popularity across the country, particularly those performed by her late husband, famed singer Abdulla Hassan (Holhudhoo Abdulla).

Among her most cherished works are Islaah Vaan Edheynama Furusathu NagaanulaaOh Wazan, and Gasrukun Malafevey. Each of these poems was adapted into song and resonated deeply with the Maldivian public.

Beyond her literary achievements, Aishath Didi was a pioneer in the civil service. She was among the first women employed at the President’s Office following the inclusion of women in government roles.

Her husband, Abdullah Hassan, passed away on November 19, 2021, after battling illness for 17 years.
