Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has arrived in Tashkent, Uzbekistan to attend the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which is being held from April 5 to April 9.

The Speaker is accompanied by a delegation of Maldivian parliamentarians, including Minority Leader and Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil, Maafannu Central MP Asma Rasheed, Huraa MP Dr Anara Naeem, Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau, and Henveiru South MP Hussain Imran Latheef.

The IPU General Assembly brings together parliamentarians from around the world to deliberate on pressing global issues. This year’s General Debate is being held under the theme “Parliamentary action for social development and justice,” providing a platform for delegates to exchange views, share experiences, and mobilise parliamentary responses on related issues.

In addition to the General Debate, all IPU statutory bodies will convene during the assembly. These include the Governing Council, Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, the Committee on Middle East Questions, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Young MPs.

Speaker Abdul Raheem has previously represented the Maldives at several high-level IPU meetings, continuing the country's engagement with global parliamentary dialogue and cooperation.
