The Department of National Registration (DNR) has commenced ID card issuance and printing services in Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo, making it the latest addition to the Government’s nationwide effort to decentralise essential services.
According to the DNR, this marks the 15th time the service has been launched in islands outside Malé City. Previously, ID cards were printed in Malé and sent to the islands. With this new setup, Gadhdhoo residents can now obtain their ID cards directly from within the island, reducing wait times and improving accessibility.
Gadhdhoo is the first island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, aside from the atoll’s capital, to receive this service. The expansion of ID card printing services began in September last year, starting with the Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council and Gaafu Alifu Villingili Council. It was later extended to Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo and Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.
In January this year, the service was made available in Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo, and in March, the DNR and Lhaviyani Atoll Council formalised an agreement to facilitate the service through the council office.
This initiative is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to make ID card services accessible in every inhabited island or atoll capital. The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology is working to expand the service to more areas as the necessary equipment becomes available.
