Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation after ammunition was discovered in the possession of a foreign national at Velana International Airport (VIA).

The incident occurred last night when a Colombian national, travelling on a tourist visa, was found in possession of bullets during routine security checks at Velana International Airport. He was preparing to board Emirates flight EK653 to Dubai, which was scheduled to depart at 23:00 local time.

He was promptly taken into police custody and brought before the Criminal Court, which ordered a six-day remand as investigations continue. The Police has not disclosed the suspect’s identity or provided further information on the type or quantity of ammunition recovered.

Maldives enforces strict laws prohibiting the possession of firearms and ammunition without prior authorisation.
